How is stress affecting your running?
Get to the heart of what’s holding you back
Let’s face it; we all experience stress to some degree every day.
But have you considered how stress may be interfering with your running?
Let me guess: running is your favorite way to relieve stress, right?
There’s plenty of research available showing that running is a great way to relieve stress.
But stress can also make running feel really difficult, and when it gets really bad,
running feels downright impossible.
If there’s an aspect of your life that is overwhelming, wearing you down or preoccupying your mind,
it’s going to affect your running.
Gain insight into all the factors affecting your motivation, energy level and running quality.
Noticing how running is affected by other aspects of your life gives you the insight you need to
know just where to focus your time and effort to create the best results.
For example, can you identify with any of these statements?
“I sleep a bit less than I probably should, but it’s not really affecting me, right?”
“I really don’t have time or bother to pay that much attention to my diet.”
“My work is really demanding and overwhelming that I have no energy for anything else.”
“I have way to much work to do during the day to run.”
“I know rest days matter, but I need to run all the time to burn off stress and feel good.”
“When I start to feel tired all the time, I need to push myself harder to regain momentum.”
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone!
What happens in other areas of your life does affect your running. You revive your
running by lowering the stress in other areas of your life, and not in a way that involves
trying to fix everything. That would be overwhelming, and I’m totally against overwhelming.
Rather, the key to better running lies in setting priorities and asking the questions
that will direct you to the most immediate and impactful actions.
It begins with asking questions (and getting answers) to these vitally important questions:
• Why am I so tired all the time?
• Why is so hard for me to recover from long runs?
• Am I doing enough to reach my goals?
• Am I ready for a longer (or harder) race?
• What does this pain mean?
Tuning in to your body's signals allows you to become intimately aware of how your body is responding to training.
“By paying attention to how your mind and body feel, you are empowering
both yourself and your running. Developing this respect for mind and
body changes running from simple exercise to a journey of discovery and growth.”
–Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, Buddhist monk, marathon runner
Gain Clarity and Insight so You Can Lower Stress and Run Better
The Revive Your Running program challenges you to notice what else is going on
in your life that may be affecting how you feel when running.
How’s your sleep? Are you meeting your body’s nutritional needs?
Are you well hydrated? Are you experiencing any emotional stress or pressure?
Give them a rating, write them down and see the patterns emerge.
Answering these questions through the daily reflective process will have a
direct and profound impact on your running quality and fitness
outcomes. This is the process that is mindful running.
Gain the clarity and insights that allow you to:
Know how and what stressors are affecting you.
Whether you’re recovering well enough or need more rest days
If you’re at risk of overtraining or burnout.
Show up on race day feeling relaxed and confident in your preparation.
Better manage your time, training and recovery to reach your training goals sooner.
“The training log book is absolutely stunning and inspiring! It makes me feel as though are going through some of the same challenges I am and it encourages me to start running again.”— Shelly D., Houston, TX
“It’s very helpful to be able to numerically record stress to really see how it all adds up in a simplified, to-the-point kind of way. And I love being able to rate my runs with stars; it feels fun, and that’s how running should be!”–Ashley A., Boulder, CO
The thing is, a lot of runners end up injured, burned out or overtrained
because they measured the things that seem important, like weekly
mileage and pace and per mile. But those numbers don’t reveal the full story.
Only your body can tell you the full truth.
The Revive Your Running program takes guesswork out of how to manage
your running by helping you get clear on what works and what doesn’t for you.
Run with confidence, knowing that you’re doing what’s best for you given
everything that’s going on in your life right now.
